For everyone who survived Mermicide – the highly anticipated follow-up has arrived, and the water is considerably less safe.

Emmett Francis is many things: Illyria’s dutiful lighthouse keeper, its local mermaid rights activist, and apparently the most decent man alive. He is also, most recently, journalist Tess Pendleton’s latest assignment. But when beheadings by a frightening new serial killer begin, and danger arrives close enough to be a flatmate-shaped problem, she starts to suspect the pen isn’t quite as mighty as advertised...and that fishing for a deeper story may have left her rather out of her depth.

Piper Tourneau, for her part, is just trying to have a normal life. The blue-skinned, sharp-smiled mermaid she shares hers with makes that somewhat difficult, though – and after the Illyrian council leader’s son goes missing and the island’s mermaids are publicly blamed, “normal” has never felt further away. Nor has the answer to one very pressing question: how well do you really know the monster you love?
